It is because their parents are the first generation of gamers (ok serious gamers from nineties). They are much more opened to colorful experience that is not punishingly difficult with small stories behind which are not difficult either.Īlas this game will be locked behind gamekeepers for them - their parents. with that age there is no way for them to have "nostalgia" nor a hardwired understanding that platformer can only be done a certain way. Main audience are really kids (pre-teenagers that wants to feel teenagers). The sweet spot IMO are the portables, which are very robust systems and up to the Vita generally don't rely on patches as much. This harms long term collecting and advantages digital a lot. But generally cult collectors stuff is a lot less mainstream and odder than Balan.Īs for future collections, the big problem I feel is that many games aren't complete on day 1 and often need serious patches. Neptunia Virtual Stars probably will be some kind of collectors game/cult hit, since its main hook is appearances by Japanese Virtual Youtubers like Korone Inugami. There's a lot of little odd rpgs out there that get neglected. I usually push Blue Reflection as another cult game, a cozy magical girl Persona. It's a very charming storybook platformer from NIS that seems to have gone totally overlooked. Like instead of Balan Wonderworld, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a pretty good candidate for cult status. There are cult games, but it seems on Reddit people play really mainstream stuff. I just find a lot of enjoyment in underdog stories, and curious if people ever think about this Is it possible for "cult" hits to come out in this era? Are we too aware of how games function and perhaps better at critiquing now than we were when older games slipped under the radar and missed their audience? Can a game as widely covered as Balan find soil to grow in? Should I buy a copy of Balan Wonderland and bury it in my backyard so I can sell if for 700 dollars in 5 years?ĮDIT 2: I also want to clarify I have not PLAYED Balan Wanderwand myself. Balan is honestly the most recent example of a big budget platformer trying to make a new identity and game loop for itself.
The only game I can compare it to in my most recent memory is Mighty No 9 and Yooka Laylee, but those were rehashes on tried and true formulas that failed to recapture their built in audience. And sure there are bad games still, but usually it's because they are broken or simply generic.īalan is pretty distinct in both it's flaws and art style which could make it something that lands with a certain evangelical audience over time. Games like Cyberpunk are panned for technical issues sometimes but it's not quite hated or dismissed. I find it interesting how there haven't really been any outright panned mass market games anymore. I'm curious if there's a chance it will land cult status as copies get bought up or destroyed, and time and nostalgia come into play?
